About Debbie Fontana
Hi! I’m Debbie Fontana and I specialize in writing about health, weight loss, and nutrition.
I’ll probably talk about all 3 topics in this blog. But my main focus is losing weight the easy way.
Like just about everyone else, I used to believe you had to suffer to lose weight.
Then I Learned That Wasn’t True
But my discovery didn’t come from research about weight loss. It came when I was thinking about ways to reduce high blood pressure without drugs.
Let me explain.
In the mid-1990s, my mother developed high blood pressure. But she refused to take blood pressure drugs. So I created a diet for her that combined two parts.
If you’ve read my diet book — I Love to Cheat — you already know the details of this story.
If not, keep reading.
I think you’ll be surprised by just how easy it is to lose weight when you have to.
The first part of the diet was adding some foods that supposedly lower blood pressure.
I had done research years earlier on the medicinal properties of foods. But as far as I knew, no one had ever published a reasonable diet to reduce blood pressure. All the studies involved eating large quantities of one food, such as rice.
So I put together a list of those foods and let my mother choose the ones she liked. Then I added them to her diet.
The second part of the diet was weight loss. Because excess weight can contribute to high blood pressure.
We tried a typical diet. But she couldn’t live with all the rules and restrictions.
Failure Was Not An Option
You see, my maternal grandmother had died years earlier of a stroke. Her blood pressure had never been completely controlled even with medication.
So we needed to get my mother’s blood pressure down quickly.
But she’s Italian. She wasn’t willing to give up pasta, pizza, or tasty snacks. She refused to be hungry. And she wasn’t about to start a formal exercise program.
So I was forced to come up with a diet plan to meet her needs and wants.
We used a modified food pyramid, added all her favorite foods, and increased her calories until she wasn’t hungry.
By typical diet standards, she was cheating every day. Unless you consider chocolate and strawberry pie to be diet foods.
Amazingly, It Worked!
She lost 3 pounds the first week, then up to 2 pounds each week after that until she reached her target weight.
Best of all, her blood pressure dropped to 138/78 from 160/80 in just one month. Eventually, it fell all the way to 120/80.
So what started as a blood pressure diet also taught me how to lose weight easily. No hunger. No exercise. No medications.
And I’d like to share some of that information — and more — with you in this blog.
So feel free to look around and comment on my posts. I’d love to hear what you think.
To your weight loss success!
